From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Doris was born Doris McKernan on August 23, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1946 and received the habit on June 25, 1947 when she was given the religious name, Sister Margaret Helene. (She began using the name, Sister Doris after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 26, 1948 and final vows on August 27, 1951. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1948-1950; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1950-1953; Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1953-1958, 1967-1972; Mt. St. Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1958-1965; Annunciation, Crestwood, NY, 1965-1966; and St. Rose, Haddon Heights, 1966-1967. Sister also served as Director of Religious Education: at St. Joseph Parish, Pomfret, MD, 1973-1978; St. Bernardine, Suitland, MD; St. Bernardine, Avenel, NJ, 1980-1982; St. Mary, Deal, NJ, 1982; St. Bernadette, Parlin, NJ, 1982-1983; St. Vincent, Bayonne, NJ, 1983-1984; St. Vincent de Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1984-1985; Christ the King, Hillside, NJ, 1985-1986; St. Edward, Milford, NJ, 1986-1988; and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Wayne, NJ, 1988. Sister Doris earned her AB in Latin from Seton hall University, and an MA in Religious Education from Catholic University. She died May 24, 2016.
