Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Monica was born Monica McGloin on January 4, 1941 in NYC. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 30, 1964. There is no recorded date for reception of the habit. She received the religious name, Sister Monica Mary. (She began using the name, Sister Monica after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on September 10, 1966 and final vows on September 9, 1972. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Columbus, OH, 1968-1970; and Cincinnati, OH, 1971-1979. She was a nurse with Cincinnati Area Senior Services, 1979-1981, and a volunteer grant writer with the Community Land Co-op of Cincinnati, 1982-1983. Sister worked in developing a community center for Newburgh Ministry, Newburgh, NY, 1983-1984. Sister Monica was president of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor, Ossining, NY, 1984-1992. Following a sabbatical, she did consulting services for various organizations in the Bronx, NY, 1993-1994, and coordinated the Intercommunity Ministry Collaborative, Cincinnati, OH, 1994. She was a member of the staff of the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center, Cincinnati, 1995-2002, and was a family advocate at St. Frances Seraph School. She served on the General Council of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, NY, 2003-2009. She died Oct. 2, 2019.
