Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Jean was born Elizabeth McGivern on May 11, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1940 and received the habit on June 27, 1941 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Jean. She pronounced first vows on June 28, 1942 and final vows on August 20, 1948. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Casa San Jose, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1943-1950; Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, Professor of Biology, 1956-1973, 1974-1975; Rutgers University, as both student and Professor, 1966-1970; Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford, NJ, 1973-1974; Lecturer at Fairleigh Dickinson University, 1973-1974; Dutchess community College, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1975-1978; College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ, 1978-1980; Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, NJ, 1980-1982; Monmouth College, West Long Branch, NJ, 1982-1983; and Georgian Court, Lakewood, NJ, 1984-1991. Sister also served the Congregation as Mistress of the Junior Professed Sisters, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1957-1966, and as Vocation Director, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, 1966-1970. Sister Mary Jean earned her: BS and MS in Education from Catholic University; her PhD from Catholic University; and was a Registered Electrologist, earned at Ferri School. She died March 5, 2001.
