Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Aquin was born Alice McDonald on December 29, 1927 in Poughkeepsie, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Aquin. She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Peter, Rosendale, NY, 1947-1949; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1949-1955; St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1955-1957; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1957-1958; Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1958-1963; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1966-1969; and Pope Pius HS, Passaic, NJ, 1969-1983. Sister also served as Superior at the House of Studies, Washington, DC, 1963-1966. She attended a sabbatical program at Washington Theological Union, Washington, DC, 1983-1984 and was a Director of Religious Education and Youth Minister at Holy Family Church, Turnersville, NJ, 1984. Sister Mary Aquin earned her BA in Mathematics from Villanova University, and her MS in earth Science from Catholic University. She also earned permanent certification in Mathematics and NJ Certification in Administration. She died May 12, 2015.
