Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann Mary was born Ann Mary McCarthy on September 9, 1922 in NYC. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 8, 1947 and received the habit on March 29, 1948 when she received the religious name, Sister Martin de Porres. She pronounced first vows on March 30, 1949 and final vows on March 30 1952. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Detroit MI, 1949-1950, 1953-1955; student nurse supervisor in Detroit, MI, 1956-1957; unit supervisor at Calvary Hospital, NYC, 1950-1953; Supervisor - PHN Program, NYC, 1959-1964; and Boston, MA, 1965-1969. Sister was also: community health nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital Outreach Clinic, 1969-1971; Director of PHN program at Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce, PR,1971-1973; PHN nursing , Columbus, OH, 1973-1974; Director PHN at Barry College, Miami, FL, 1974-1976; and instructor of PHN at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK, 1976-1981. Sister Ann Mary was director of the pastoral care department at St. John’s Medical Center, Steubenville, OH, 1982-1986, and worked in pastoral care with the Dominican Sisters Family Health Services, Ossining, NY, 1986-1994. She volunteered her services in the Dominican Sisters infirmary, Newburgh, NY, 1994-1996. She moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope, Newburgh NY in 2006. Sister Ann Mary earned her BA in Nursing from St. John’s University and her MA in PHN from New York University. She died November 30, 2012.
