Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Eileen was born Eileen McCabe on September 12, 1929 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1952 and received the habit on June 12, 1953 when she was given the religious name, Sister Joseph Therese. (She began using the name, Sister Eileen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 15, 1954 and final vows on August 21, 1957. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Patrick, Newburgh, NY, 1955-1960; Bayamon, Puerto Rico, where she taught English at Academia San Jose High School, 1960-1973; Mount Saint Mary Academy, Newburgh , NY, 1973-1974; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1974-1982; Pope Pius High School, Passaic, NJ, 1982-1983; Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, NY, 1983-1995; and taught English at St. Michael Academy in New York City, 1995-2009. At that time she retired and moved to the Wartburg, Mt. Vernon, New York. . Sister Eileen earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Seton Hall University and a Master’s degree in English from Catholic University. She died January 23, 2017.
