Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Cecile was born Cecile Marquis on December 12, 1911 in Salem, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on November 1, 1931 and received the habit on July 1, 1932 when she received the religious name, Sister Marie du St. Esprit. (She began using the name, Sister Cecile after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on July 2, 1933 and final vows on July 2, 1937. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1933-1948, 1973-1979; St. Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1948-1949, 1951-1952; St. Rose, Acushnet, MA, 1949-1951, 1956-1961; and St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1952-1956, 1961-1973. Sister moved the Residential Care in the Newburgh Center of Hope in 2002. She December 3, 2007.
