Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Janet was born Janet Marchesani on May 16, 1938 in Chester, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1958 and received the habit on June 16, 1959 when she was given the religious name, Sister John Theresa. (She began using the name, Sister Janet after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 21, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Patrick ,Woodbury, NJ, 1960-1965; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1965-1970; and Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1970-1976. She was coordinator of Religious Education for the Deaf in the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh, PA, 1976-1980, and vocation director for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1980-1984. Sister Janet is a member of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf and the International Catholic Deaf Association. She ministered with the Deaf Community in the five northern counties of the Archdiocese of New York, through the office of Catholic Charities, 1983- and, also served as congregation vocation minister for the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 2004-. Sister Janet earned: her BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY; her MS in Religious Education from Duquesne University; and her MS in Pastoral Counseling from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY.
