Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Eleanor was born Genevieve Mahoney on July 20, 1916 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on October 7, 1934 and received the habit on June 26, 1935 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Eleanor. She pronounced first vows on June 26, 1936 and final vows on August 20, 1932. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1936-1938; St. Thomas, Pleasantville, NY, 1938-1940; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1940-1947; Pope Pius XII High School, Passaic, NJ, 1947-1949; St. Augustin, Larchmont, NY, 1955-1961. Sister also had a year of study at Notre Dame University, IN, 1954-1955. Sister Mary Eleanor served as Assistant Novice Mistress for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1949-1951, and then as Novice Mistress, 1951-1954. She then taught Philosophy and Religious Studies at Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1961-. At the college, sister was also: Director of Admissions, 1961-1968; and Registrar, 1961-1966. Sister was a full time student at Boston Theological Institute and visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity. After a year sabbatical from Mt. St. Mary College, she returned to the college, 1976-1977. Sister also served as Pastoral Minister, St. Anthony Parish, Southern Pines, NC, 1977-1978, and as Director of Ministries for Women in the Diocesan Office, Richmond, VA, 1978-. Sister Mary Eleanor ministered at the Salesian Mission Office, New Rochelle, NY, 1980-1982. She served the congregation as part time infirmary staff at Mt. St. Mary and Editor of Forward" a Newburgh Dominican publication. Sister helped with tutoring in the (HEOP), Higher Education Opportunities, part time, 1983-1984. Sister Mary Eleanor earned her: BS in Education from Fordham University, Her MA in Theology from Providence College, Providence, RI and her Ph.D. in Sacred Doctrine from Notre Dame University, IN. She died June 6, 2004.
