Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Carmel was born Elizabeth Lynch on February 1, 1911 in New York City. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1937 and received the habit on August 5, 1937 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Carmel. She pronounced first vows on August 6, 1938 and final vows on August 21, 1944. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1938-1939; Mt. St. Mary, 1939; Sacred Heart, Camden, 1939-1941; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1941-1944; St. Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1944-1960; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, April-June, 1946; St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1960-1961; Pope Pius High School, Passaic, NJ, 1961-1962; and Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, as principal, 1962-1964. Sister was Temporary Bursar for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, Sept. 1964-Feb. 1965. She was then appointed Bursar General by the Council in February, 1965. Sister was elected Bursar General at the General Chapter of the Dominican Sisters, 1965-1971. She then served as Assistant Treasurer and helped with clerical services in the Finance Office,1971-1984, and then became part time staff. Sister Mary Carmel earned: a BS in Elementary Education from Villanova University, PA; took Accounting Theory at Pace College, NY; and Accounting and Office Procedures from Notre Dame University, IN. Sister was a candidate for an MA at Columbia University, NY. She died September 21, 1999.
