This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Marie Bernard was born Margaret Luning on January 22, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1944 and received the habit on June 11, 1945 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marie Bernard. She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1946-1948; Dominican Day School, Larchmont, NY, 1948-1951; Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1951-1952; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1952-1954; San Jose, Villa Caparra, Puerto Rico, 1954-1960, 1966-1978; St. Elizabeth, Elizabeth City, NC, 1960-1965; San Jose, San Lorenzo Puerto Rico, 1965-1966; St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1978-1981; and Academia San Jose High School, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, 1981-1984. Sister Marie Bernard earned a BA in Social Studies from Sacred Heart College, Puerto Rico, and an MA in Instructional Administration from NY University. She died April 17, 2000.
