Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie Genevieve was born Mary Love on February 17, 1924 in Bronx, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1949 and received the habit on August 12, 1949 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marie Genevieve. She pronounced first vows on August 16, 1950 and final vows on August 21, 1953. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Casa, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1950-1951; St. Mary Gloucester, NJ, 1951-1955; and Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale, NY, 1955-1961. During this time sister also studied at Columbia University and then began her ministry as college professor: Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1962-, 1975-1982, appointed Acting Academic Dean, 1968-1972; and Provost, Feb. 1972-June, 1972. Sister was Director of sisters in temporary profession, 1975-1982. She was elected to the General Council of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY and served, 1983- 1987, and re re-elected, 1987-1991. Sister was also part time Director of the Institute of Research, and Professor of Math at Mt. St. Mary College. Sister Marie Genevieve earned: her BA in Math from Hunter College, NY; an MA from Villanova University, PA; and a Ed.D. from Columbia University, NY. She died October 16, 2000.
