Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maura was born Maura, (Flora) Longshore on March 29, 1922 in New York City. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1950 and received the habit on June 15, 1951 when she was given the religious name, Sister John Maura. (She began using the name, Sister Maura after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1952 and final vows on August 23, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Paterson, NY, 1952-1954; Villa Caparra, Puerto Rico, 1954-1964; Immaculate High School, Danbury, CT, 1964-1966; San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, 1966-1967; Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1967-1968; and taught Spanish at Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1968-1972. Sister Maura then began her ministry of House of Prayer: Convent Station, NJ, 1972-1973, 1974-1975; and Goshen, NY, as Head of the House, 1973-1974. She participated in the People of Hope in St. Antoninus Parish, Newark, NJ, Sept. 1975-Dec. 1975. Along with Sister Lucy Povilonis she ministered at St. Mary Parish, Marlboro, NY, 1976-1980 while living and running a House of Prayer in Newburgh, NY. Sister Maura earned her BA from the College of the Sacred Heart, Puerto Rico, and her MA in Spanish from Middlebury College, VT. She died March 22, 2004.
