Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ruth was born Ruth Lindner on October 31, 1929 in Cold Spring, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1948 and received the habit on June 17, 1949 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marie Alberta. (She began using the name, Sister Ruth after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 19, 1950 and final vows on August 21, 1953. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1950-1951; St. Thomas, Pleasantville, NY, 1951-1953; San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, 1953-1958; San Jose, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, 1958-1962; Sts. John and Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1962-1963; St. Peter, Rosendale, NY 1963-1964; St. Boniface, Paterson, 1964-1965; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1965-1969; and part time in St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY, 1969-1972. Sister ministered in the Mt. St. Mary Infirmary, 1973-1975, and was a full time nursing student, 1978-1979. She then served in: Bishop Dunn Memorial School, Newburgh, NY, 1979-; and Mt. St. Mary Infirmary, Newburgh, 1981-1982. Sister Ruth earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY. She also earned her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She died December 27, 1999.
