Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Noella was born Noella Letourneau on December 25, 1926 in Fall River, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on February 2, 1947 and received the habit on July 28, 1947 when she received the religious name, Sister Marie Bernard. (She began using the name, Sister Noella after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on July 30, 1948 and final vows on August 30, 1951. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Francis Xavier, Acushnet, MA. 1948-1949,1950-1951;and St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1949-1950, 1951-1958, 1967-1968, 1971-1974. She was director of religious education for St. Anne Parish in Fall River, MA, 1974-1976. Sister then taught at St. Peter High School in Plattsburgh, NY, 1958-1959, and at St. Bernadette Elementary School in New Haven, CT, 1959-1961. Sister Noella was formation director for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, in North Dartmouth, MA, 1961-1963. She served on the General Council of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, 1970-1978. Sister was director of religious education at St. Thomas More Parish in Narragansett, RI, 1976-1987, and in 1987, she was appointed pastoral associate of the same parish. She retired from that roll in 2003 and moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope in December of that year, and then moved to the Wartburg, Mt. Vernon, NY. Sister Noella earned her BA in History/Social Sciences from Regis College in Massachusetts and her MA in Religious Education from Providence College, Providence, RI. She died February 18, 2013.
