Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary of the Cross was born Gabrielle Landry on October 13, 1907 in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. She entered the Fall River Congregation on January 8, 1929 and received the habit on July 9, 1929 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary of the Cross. She pronounced first vows on August 4, 1930 and final vows on August 15, 1934. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1929-1958; St. Francis Xavier, Acushnet, MA, 1958-1965; St. Augustine, Peru, NY, 1965-1968; and St. Philippe, Quebec, Canada, 1970-1978. Sister also provided volunteer services at St. Catherine Convent, Fall River, MA, 1979-1995. She died March 28, 2005.
