From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret Charles was born Rose Marie Kociolek on March 30, 1929 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1948 and received the habit on June 17, 1949 when she was given the religious name, Sister Margaret Charles. She pronounced first vows on June 19, 1950 and final vows on August 21, 1953. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY, 1948-1949; St. Patrick, Woodbury, NJ, 1950-1956; and Guardian Angel, New York City, 1956-1967. She taught business classes at Pope Pius XII Regional High School in Passaic, NJ, 1967-1977,was principal, 1979-1980; and then taught elementary level at Saint Christopher, Parsippany, NJ, 1977-1979. Sister was treasurer for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1980-1987. She was pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Dover, NJ, 1987-2018. Sister Margaret Charles earned: her BS in Math from Seton Hall University; her MA in Business Education from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC; and her M.Div. in Pastoral Ministry from Immaculate Conception Seminary in NJ.
