From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Thomas Mary was born Florence Kerin on February 2, 1918 in Chicago, IL. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1940 and received the habit on August 5, 1940 when she was given the religious name, Sister Thomas Mary. She pronounced first vows on August 6, 1941 and final vows on August 20, 1947. During her years in the congregation she served in the following High Schools: Pope Pius XII, Passaic, NJ, 1941-1945, 1970-1978; Raleigh, NC, 1945-1958; San Jose, Villa Caparra, Puerto Rico, 1958-1962; Gloucester Catholic, Gloucester, NJ, 1962-1965; and Mt. St. Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1965-1970. Sister also served as Pastoral Minister in St. Mary Parish, Passaic, NJ, 1978-1982 and as a receptionist at Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1982-. Sister Thomas Mary earned : A BA in Natural Science from St. Elizabeth College, Convent Station, NJ; a BS in secondary education; an MS from Notre Dame University; and a certificate in Theology from Providence College, Providence, RI. She died March 16, 2001.
