This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Gertrude Mary was born Helen Kerin on November 12, 1914 in Chicago, IL. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1935 and received the habit on June 26, 1936 when she was given the religious name, Sister Gertrude Mary. She pronounced first vows on June 27, 1937 and final vows on August 4, 1943. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Mt. St. Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1935-, as a chemistry teacher, then she transferred to the biology department where she remained until 1965. She served as principal at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, NC, 1965-1967. She then moved on to Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, where she started out as vice-principal, 1967-1970 and then served as teacher and administrative aide. She moved to St. Mary’s Home in 2009 where she remained until her death. Sister Gertrude Mary earned: her BS in Home Economics from the College of St. Elizabeth; her MA in Education from Fordham University; and her MS in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, In. Sister Gertrude Mary received the following awards: Principals Award in 1985 and again in 2001; the St. Mary’s Parish Award for Devoted Services to St Mary’s Church and School and Gloucester Catholic High School in 1999; and the Dr. Frank and Catherine Kelly Award for Services to Gloucester Catholic High School in 1997. At the 2005 Gala Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Gloucester Catholic High School she received a Proclamation signed by Governor Cody for her services in education in the state of NJ. She died December 7, 2013.
