Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann Virginia was born Margaret Kenny on July 12, 1907 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1932 and received the habit on June 28, 1933 when she was given the religious name, Sister Ann Virginia. She pronounced first vows on June 29, 1934 and final vows on August 21, 1940. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1934-1936; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1936-1941; Camden, NJ, 1941-1944; Haddon Heights, NJ, 1944-1945; Laurel Springs, NJ, 1945-1946; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1946-1947; Sacred heart, Raleigh, NC, 1947-1948; and St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1948-1951. Sister also taught in the following High Schools: Gloucester Catholic, Gloucester, NJ, 1951-1952, 1962-1966; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1952-1961; Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1961-1962, 1969-1976; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1966-1969; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1976-1978, and part time, 1978-1979. Sister taught English, Latin and Guidance. Other ministries include: Assistant Librarian, and teacher of enrichment group, Assumption School, Emerson, NJ, 1982-1984; and receptionist at Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1984-1985. Sister Ann Virginia earned a BS in Education from Villanova University, PA, and an MA in Latin from Villanova University. She died November 12, 2005.
