This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Rose Lawrence was born Elizabeth Kenney on April 14, 1926 in New Rochelle, NY. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 8, 1950 and received the habit on April 30, 1951 when she received the religious name, Sister Rose Lawrence. She pronounced first vows on May 1, 1952 and final vows on May 1, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Nursing Supervisor, Ossining, NY,1960-1968; Nursing Supervisor, Migrant Outreach Center, Hampton Bays, NY, 1968-1974; Parish ministry at Saint Brendan’s Church, Bronx, NY, 1978-1981; and opened a soup kitchen, outreach services and education component at Saint Patrick’s Parish in Newburgh, NY, 1981-1993. She served as school nurse and taught ESL classes in the Bronx, NY,1993-1997. Sister was involved in outreach to the elderly at the Church of St. Brendan, Bronx, NY, 1999-2001, and coordinated the volunteer program for Dominican Sisters Family Health in Hampton Bays, NY, 2001-2002. In 2002, Sister retired and volunteered her time as ESL instructor and helping with congregational needs. Sister Rose Lawrence earned: her RN in Nursing from Misericordia School of Nursing; a BS in Public Health from Hunter College at CUNY; an SPHN in Public Health from Teachers’ College at Columbia University, NY; and certificates in Bereavement, Literacy, and ESL. She died April 19, 2011.
