Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Jo-Ann was born Jo-Ann Iannotti on May 8, 1945 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on August 30, 1963 and received the habit on June 22, 1964 when she was given the religious name, Sister Joan Elizabeth. (She began using the name, Sister Jo-Ann after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 23, 1965 and final vows on October 10, 1970. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1967-1968; Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1968-1969; Sts. John and Pau, Larchmont, NY, 1969-1974; and Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, NY, 1974-1981. Sister was associate director of vocations for the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT, 1981-1987, and director of religious education at the Church of Saint Ann in Avon, CT, 1981-1989. Following a sabbatical and a year of stable work at Folly Farm in CT, she worked in communications at the Office of Radio and Television in the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT, 1989-1990. She was a reporter and photographer for the Catholic Transcript in Hartford, Ct, 1990-1992. Sister Jo-Ann was program developer at Wisdom House in Litchfield, CT, 1992-1999. In 1999 she was elected to the leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope. After completing a sabbatical at the end of her term she returned to Wisdom House, where she served as Art and Spirituality Coordinator, 2003-. Sister Jo-Ann earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, and her MA in Theology from Fordham University.
