From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret Mary was born Margaret Mary Houwen on February 27, 1925 in Laurel Springs, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 6, 1941 and received the habit on June 16, 1942 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary William. (She began using the name, Sister Margaret Mary after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1943 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1944-; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1960-1961; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1961-1970; Pope Pius XII High School, Passaic, NJ, 1970-1978; Holy Cross High School, Delran, NJ, 1978-1982; and St. Joseph High School, Toms River, NJ, 1982-1983. Sister Margaret Mary earned: an AB from Villanova University, PA; and an MS in science from Scranton, University. She was certified in Astronomy, Geology, Math and Secondary Education. She died April 21, 2007.
