Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Eleanor was born Eleanor Hogan on October 18, 1908 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on January 9, 1927 and received the habit on August 23, 1927 when she was given the religious name, Sister Maurice. (She began using the name, Sister Eleanor after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 24, 1928 and final vows on August 12, 1934. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1929-1937, and 1965-1966, as principal, teacher aide, 1984-1985, librarian, part time, 1985-1986; Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1937-1940; Pope Pius XII High School, Passaic, NJ, 1945-1954; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, principal, 1954-1960; Bayamon, Puerto Rico, 1960-1961;Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1961-1965; Annunciation, Crestwood, NY, 1966-1971; St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1971-1977, principal; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1977-1978; and St. Joseph Elementary, Toms River, NJ, 1978-1981. Sister also served as Administrator of Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1981-1984. Sister Eleanor earned her: BS from Seton Hall University, and MA in Religious Education from Providence College, Providence, RI. She died May 2, 2000.
