From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Teresa Paul was born Paula Heinke on July 16, 1924 in Woodhaven, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 11, 1949 and received the habit on August 12, 1949 when she was given the religious name, Sister Teresa Paul. She pronounced first vows on August 16, 1950 and final vows on August 21, 1953. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Patrick, Newburgh, NY, 1950-1952; was principal of Our Lady of Victory, Mount Vernon, NY, 1952-1955; and Nativity, Bronx, NY, 1955-1956. Sister taught business education at St. Mary’s High School, Paterson, NJ, 1956-1963; Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1963-1965; Immaculate, Danbury, CT, 1965-1967, where she also did counseling and guidance; St. Joseph High School, Toms River, NJ, 1972-1979; and was principal at Assumption School, Emerson, NJ, 1981-1987. Sister was director of admissions at Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1967-1972. She also served as: director of religious education, Holy Trinity Parish, Passaic, NJ, 1979-1981; and director of development at Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, NJ, 1987-1989. She was director of guidance at St. Mary’s High School, New Haven, CT, 1989-1991; at St. Joseph of Palisades High School, West New York, NY, 1991-1993; and at St. Mary’s School, New Monmouth, NJ, 1993- 2000. Sister Teresa Paul also counseled divorced women using a “Prism” program, at St. Mary’s Parish in New Monmouth, NJ, 1995-1998. Sister taught religious education classes in several parishes, and held parenting counseling seminars at St. Mary’s, New Monmouth, NJ, 1996-1998. She moved to St. Agnes Parish in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, where she did substitute teaching in the school, 2000-2001 before retiring in 2001. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of Mt. St, Mary College, Newburgh, NY,1975-2000 and a member of the executive committee, 1984-1999. Sister Teresa Paul earned her BS and MA in Business Education from Columbia University, and an MS in Counseling from Siena College in Loudonville, New York. She died Feb. 24, 2019
