Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Christine was born Christine Hartnett on December 22, 1939 in Ireland. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1958 and received the habit on June 16, 1959 when she was given the religious name, Sister John Kathleen. (She began using the name, Sister Christine after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 21, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1960-1967, 1980-1992; St. Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1967-1971; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1971-1972; and St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1972-1980. Sister was coordinator of religious education in St. Mary Parish, Gloucester, NJ, 1992-. Sister Christine earned her BS in Education and Philosophy from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY. Sister moved to St. Mary's Villa, Cherry Hill, NJ. She died May 31, 2019.
