This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Mary Alice was born Mary Alice Hannan on January 8, 1939 in Larchmont, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1958 and received the habit on June 16, 1959 when she was given the religious name, Sister Ann John. (She began using the name, Sister Mary Alice after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 21, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1960-1967; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1967-1969; St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1969-1971; and Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1971-1980. Sister was then director of volunteers at Covenant House in New York City, 1980-1984. She served the congregation as Candidate Director and a member of the Formation Team, 1984-1993. She was also director of social ministries at Holy Cross Church in New York City, 1984-1989, and program director for Encore 49 Residence in New York City, 1989-1995. She has been executive director of POTS (Part of the Solution), Bronx, NY, 1996-. Sister Mary Alice earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY and her MSW in Social Work from Hunter College.
