This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Catherine James was born Mary Hanley on May 6, 1927 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Catherine James. She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Our Lady of Victory, Mount Vernon, NY; Saint Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1949-1952; and Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1952-1958. She taught at the following High Schools: Gloucester, Gloucester, NJ, 1958-1960; Saint Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1960-1961; Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1961-1963;, Pope Pius XII Regional, Passaic, NJ, 1963-1967; Mount Saint Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1967-1975, Cathedral, Manhattan, 1975-1976; Saint Michael, Union City, NJ, 1977-1980, Marist, Bayonne, NJ, 1980-1985; Dickinson, Jersey City, NJ, 1986-1988; and Lincoln, Jersey City, NJ, 1988-1994. Sister was supervisor of student teachers at Saint Peter’s College, Jersey City, NJ, 1994-2001. In 2001, she retired to Tampa, Florida and remained there until she moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope in November 2005. Sister Catherine James earned her BA in English from Villanova University, PA and her MA in English from Catholic University, Washington, DC. She died January 29, 2012.
