Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Anne Stephen was born Margaret Hajducek on January 21, 1917 in Bayonne, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on December 8, 1943 and received the habit on June 18, 1944 when she was given the religious name, Sister Anne Stephen. She pronounced first vows on June 21, 1945 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1945-1950; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1950-1953; and Saint Lawrence, 1966-1976. She taught Spanish and Russian at Immaculate High School in Danbury, CT. Other ministries included: business manager at Mt. St. Mary High School, 1976-1979; clerk in the finance department at Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1979-1980; Administrative Assistant to the Mt. St. Mary Convent Administrator, 1983-1993; and family ministry in Clark, NJ, 1993-1996. Sister Anne Stephen volunteered in the development office and in the Finance Department for the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 1999-. Sister Anne Stephen earned: her BA in Spanish from Villanova University, PA; and her MA in Spanish from Middlebury College. She also earned credits in Russian from Fordham and Georgetown Universities.
