From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary was born Mary Groves on December 7, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1952 and received the habit on June 12, 1953 when she was given the religious name, Sister Ann Benjamin. (She began using the name, Sister Mary after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 15, 1954 and final vows on August 21, 1957. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Our Lady of Victory, Mount Vernon, NY, 1955-1958; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1958-1960; Saint Mary, Allenhurst, NJ, 1960-1963. She was business teacher and department chair at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1963-1992, and part time secretary to the Marist Brothers in Poughkeepsie, NY, 1972-1987. Following a sabbatical, she was involved with AA: personnel, insurance, and government food programs at Saint Vincent’s-Tacony in Philadelphia, PA, 1993-1998. She was attendance coordinator at Nazareth Academy in Philadelphia, PA, 1998-. Sister Mary earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Seton Hall University. Sister moved to the Wartburg Assisted Living, Mt. Vernon, NY.
