Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Rose was born Antoinette Gravel on September 2, 1919 in Valcour, PQ, Canada. She entered the Fall River Congregation on February 2, 1935 and received the habit on December 7, 1935 when she received the religious name, Sister Rose Antoinette. (She began using the name, Sister Rose after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on December 8, 1936 and final vows on December 8, 1940. During her years in the congregation she served in the following: Sister was engaged in a variety of ministries. She served as cook and seamstress for the Dominican Sisters in Peru, NY, Plattsburgh, NY and Chateaugay, NY, 1949-1955; Motherhouse, Fall River, NY; St. Rose Convent, Acushnet, MA; and at St. Louis de France Convent in Swansea, 1955-. In 1973, after completing Home Economics and Consumer Education Studies, she began teaching at the Middle School in Fall River, MA; she taught home economics at Durfee High School in Fall River, MA, 1979-1984; and she also volunteered with the Family Service Association, 1982-1987. Sister Rose was engaged in a variety of services at the Motherhouse in Fall River; director of food services; supervisor of housekeeping and kitchen personnel; and coordinator of car maintenance. When the Fall River Motherhouse became the Center of Hope in 1995, she continued as a volunteer in pastoral services to the elderly sisters until 2002, when she moved to the Landmark at Fall River and later that year to the Center of Hope in Newburgh. Sister Rose earned her BS in Vocational Education at Rhode Island College. She died February 27, 2011.
