This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Hugh James was born Gertrude Grabowska on November 26, 1922 in Amsterdam, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on August 30, 1963 and received the habit on June 22, 1964 when she was given the religious name, Sister Hugh James. She pronounced first vows on June 23, 1965 and final vows on July 26, 1970. During her years in the congregation she served in the following places: clerical and secretarial ministry, Mount Saint Mary College, 1963-1979. She worked in the finance office of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1980-1992. After completing a sabbatical, she was sacristan and supply clerk for the convent infirmary, Newburgh, 1992-1995. Sister Hugh James was sacristan and did clerical work for the Dominican Sisters of Hope in the Newburgh Center of Hope, 1995-. Sister Hugh James took the Stenographic Course at Amsterdam School of Commerce in Amsterdam, New York.
