Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie d'Aquin was born Claire Gamache on January 29, 1901 in Fall River, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on August 4, 1919 and received the habit on August 4, 1920 when she received the religious name, Sister Marie d'Aquin. She pronounced first vows on August 4, 1921 and final vows on August 4, 1925. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Joseph, Fall River, MA, 1921-1924; St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1924-1929, 1930-1935, 1947-1948, 1964-1971; St. Francis Xavier, Acushnet, MA, 1929-1930, 1935-1937, 1954-1964; Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1948-1953, 1971-1973; and D'Youville Academy, Plattsburgh, NY, 1953-1954. Sister also served as assistant infirmarian, Portress, assistant sacristan, and in prayer and presence at the Motherhouse, Fall River, MA, 1973-1998. She died August 2, 1998.
