Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Lorraine was born Lorraine Gallagher on July 4, 1928 in Newburgh, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister James Helene. (She began using the name, Sister Lorraine after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Thomas, Cornwall, NY; Saint Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1948-1950; St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1950- 1958; Saint Mary, Passaic, NJ, 1958-1963; and Saint Peter School, Rosendale, NY, 1963-1968. She was principal at Saint Christopher School in Parsippany, NJ, 1968-2003. In 2004, she moved to Cornwall NY. Sister Lorraine earned her BS in Elementary Education from Seton Hall University and her Certification in Administration from Fordham University.
