Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret was born Margaret Foster on July 21, 1939 in Mt. Vernon, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 4, 1962 and received the habit on June 19, 1963 when she was given the religious name, Sister James Maureen. (She began using the name, Sister Margaret after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 22, 1964 and final vows on October 26, 1969. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1967-1970; and Saint Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1970-1975. She Director of Religious Education at: St. Paul’s Parish, 1975-1979; Holy Trinity Parish, Westfield, NJ, 1975-1983; and at Saint Paul’s Parish, Clifton, NJ, 1983-1986. Following a renewal program, she was pastoral associate at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church, Roseland, NJ, 1987-1990; Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish in Elizabeth, NJ, 1990-1992; and at St. Patrick Parish in Chatham, NJ. After retiring from formal minister, Sister volunteered as: Eucharistic Minister to the Sick in Morristown Hospital, Morristown, NJ; Tutor for Literacy Volunteers as teacher of ESL, (English as a second language); involved in Social Justice at St. Patrick's, Chatham, NJ; member of the Parish Partnership Committee with Our Lady of Victory Parish, Paterson, NJ; visits homebound parishoners; and gives retreats for parish ministers. She also visits our sisters who are in the Infirmary at the Caldwell, NJ, Motherhouse. Sister Margaret earned her BA in English, and her MS in Adult Religious Education from Fordham University.
