Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ellen was born Ellen Bridget Ford on March 16, 1909 in County Kerry, Ireland. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 1, 1926 and received the habit on June 28, 1927 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Vincentia.(She began using the name, Sister Ellen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 8, 1928 and final vows on June 9, 1932. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: New York, NY, 1929-1932, 1936-1940, 1947-1954; Detroit, MI, 1932-1936, 1954-1956; Dayton, OH, 1940-1947, 1956-1965; Columbus, OH, 1965-1974, 1978-1983; Lancaster, OH, 1974-1978, as sacristan; and Kenton, OH, 1983-1990, as sacristan. Sister worked as a volunteer in the Development Office of the Dominican Sisters Family Health Services, Ossining, NY, 1990-1993. She died February 18, 2003.
