Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Nora was born Nora Foley on February 6, 1933 in Ireland. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1954 and received the habit on June 13, 1955 when she was given the religious name, Sister Patricia Margaret. (She began using the name, Sister Nora after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 18, 1956 and final vows on August 21, 1959. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1956-1967; and Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, where she was principal, 1967-1979. She was also principal at Saint Mary School, Gloucester, NJ, 1979-2004. Sister was an instructional aide with the Gloucester City Public School, Gloucester NJ, 2004-20011. Sister Nora earned her: BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY; and her MA in Administration from Villanova University.

Sister retired in, 2011 and moved to Asbury Park, New Jersey. In February 2013, she moved to Gloucester Town where she volunteered Monday through Friday, serving the homeless and taking Holy Communion to the sick and shut-in, volunteer work which she found extremely rewarding. For recreation she enjoyed long two-hour daily walks.

In October 2015, Sister moved to St. Mary’s Villa, Cherry Hill, New Jersey then in February 2020 she moved to Brandywine Senior Living in Wall, New Jersey where she spent her final days. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Sister Nora Foley, OP (Sister Patricia Margaret) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died on April 9, 2022 in Wall, New Jersey. She was 89 years of age.
