Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Susan was born Assunta Susan Flynn on September 18, 1948 in Worcester, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on January 2, 1971 and received the habit on August 1, 1971 when she received the religious name, Sister Susan. She pronounced first vows on March 5, 1972 and final vows on August 13, 1978. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1972-1975; St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1975-1977; and St Peter, Plattsburgh ,NY, 1977-1979. She was a teacher aide in the Head Start Program at Plattsburgh State College, 1979-1980, and a camp counselor at Camp Mary Crest in Grande Isle, VT during the summer of 1980. Sister moved to CT where she taught at: Saint Louis of France, West Haven, 1984-1986; and at Sacred Heart/St. Anthony, Bridgeport, 1986-1988. She also taught at: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1988-1992; Saint Mary, New Monmouth, NJ, 1992-1994; and Holy Cross, New Britain, CT, 1994-1998. Sister was a substitute teacher in various schools, 1998-2001. She served on the secretarial staff at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, NY, 2001-2008. Sister Susan earned her AB in Education/Theology from Providence College, Providence, RI, and her MS in Early Childhood from Southern Connecticut State College.
