Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Patricia was born Helen Flynn on February 23, 1932 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1950 and received the habit on June 15, 1951 when she was given the religious name, Sister Patricia William. (She began using the name, Sister Patricia after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1952 and final vows on August 23, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon, Heights, NJ, 1952-1953; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1953-1954; Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1954-1956; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1956-1961. She taught history at Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, 1961-1964 and at St. Joseph’s High School, Toms River, NJ, 1964-1965. Sister was principal at: Holy Family School, New Rochelle, NY, 1965-1968; St. Thomas, Pleasantville, NY, 1968-1971; St. Therese, Succasunna, NJ, 1972-1973; St. Boniface, Paterson, NJ, 1973-1974; Bishop Navagh Regional Elementary, Paterson, NJ, 1974-1975; St. Mary, Ocean, NJ, 1975-1984; and at St Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1993-1997. Sister Patricia was assistant for planned giving in the development office of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, 1990-1993. Following a sabbatical, she became coordinator of volunteers with the Literacy Volunteers of America in Elizabeth, NJ, 1999-2002. She also did volunteer work in Jersey City and for the administrative offices of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, NY. Sister Patricia earned: a BA from Villanova University, PA; and an MA in American History from Catholic University, Washington, DC. She received certification in Supervision and Administration in Elementary School Education from Seton Hall University.
