This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Jean Matthew was born Madeline Finnegan on January 22, 1910 in Laurel Springs, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 5, 1926 and received the habit on May 6, 1927 when she was given the religious name, Sister Jean Matthew. She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1949 and final vows on August 22, 1952. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Anthony, Hawthorne, NJ, 1929-1933; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1933-1942; St. Patrick, Newburgh, NY, 1942-1950; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1950, 1955; Regina Coeli, Hyde Park, NY, 1955-1961; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1961-1963; Durham, NC, 1963-1967; St. Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1967-1968; St. Mary, Deal, NJ, 1968-1970; St. Joan of Arc, Camden, NJ, 1970-1977; and St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1977-1982. Sister also served as an assistant in the CCD program and other parish ministries, St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1980-1984 and in the Learning Center, St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1982-1983. Sister Jean Matthew earned: a BS in Education from Fordham University and an MA from Villanova University, Villanova, PA. She died January 11, 2004.
