Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary was born Mary Feigen on February 15, 1947 in New York City. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on August 30, 1964 and received the habit on June 15, 1965 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Lisa. (She began using the name, Sister Mary after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 29, 1966 and final vows on August 20, 1972. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1968-1971; Saint Theresa, Succasunna, NJ, 1971-1972; Saint Patrick, Woodbury, NJ, 1972-1973; and Saint Rose School in Haddon Heights, NJ, 1973-1975. She taught biology at Gloucester Catholic High School in Gloucester, NJ,1975-1983. Sister was director of religious education at Annunciation Parish in Wayne, NJ,1983-1995 and was pastoral associate at St. Joseph’s Parish in Lincoln Park, NJ, 1995-2003. Sister was a member of the leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 2003-2009. Sister Mary earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, and her MA in Secondary School Science from Villanova University.
