Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Anita Rosaire was born Margaret Fay on November 14, 1908 in New York City. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1928 and received the habit on June 18, 1929 when she was given the religious name, Sister Anita Rosaire. She pronounced first vows on June 19, 1930 and final vows on August 20, 1936. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Holy Rosary, New York City, 1930; St. Paul, Jersey City, 1932; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1932, 1934, 1953-1959; Guardian Angel, NYC, 1935-1941; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1941-1943; St. Mary, Passaic, NJ, 1943, 1950-1953, 1959-1966; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1946-1950; and St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1950-1953. Sister was an Assistant Professor of History at Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1966-1975. Sister Anita Rosaire served on the Congressional staff, Washington, DC, 1975-2000. Sister earned: a BS in Secondary Education, Fordham University; an MA in history from Villanova University; and an MA in Theology from Providence College, RI. She died February 21, 2007.
