From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Barbara was born Barbara Farley on June 2, 1935 in Newark, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 12, 1957 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marie Celeste.(She began using the name, Sister Barbara after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1956-1957; St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1958-1965; St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1965-1966; Regina Coeli, Hyde Park, NY, 1966-1976; Center for Developmental Learning and Reading,(Montessori),Newburgh, NY,1973-1974; Holy Rosary, Hawthorne, NY, 1976-1977; St. Joan of Arc, Camden, NJ,1977-1983; and Christ the King, Haddonfield, NJ, 1994-1995. She was principal at Saint Joan of Arc School, Camden, NJ, 1983-1994. After completing a sabbatical, Sister became director of religious education at St. Rose of Lima Parish, Short Hills, NJ, 1996-2004. and then at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Mountainside NJ, 2004-. Sister Barbara earned her Master’s degree in education from SUNY at New Paltz, NY.

Sister Barbara Farley, OP (Sister Marie Celeste) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died Thursday May 19, 2022 in Wall, New Jersey. She was 86 years old.
