Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Frances Irene was born Evelyn Fair on July 8, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Frances Irene. She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1947-1953; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1953-1954; St. Joseph Elementary, Toms River, NJ, 1954-1965; principal/teacher at Cathedral Elementary, Raleigh, NC, 1965-1967; principal/teacher, Immaculata, Raleigh, NC, 1967-1969; and Sts. John and Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1969-1970. She was a teacher for children with learning disabilities at Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1970-1992; and Director of Special Education and Director of Development at Bishop Dunn Memorial. Sister Frances Irene was also a volunteer religious education teacher at St. Patrick’s, Newburgh, NY, 1970-2000. In the 1980's, Sister received the Teacher of the Year Award for Special Education. Sister Frances Irene earned her BS in Elementary Education from Villanova University, Villanova, PA and her MA in Special Education from Seton Hall University. She also did post graduate work at Fairfield University in CT.
