Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Francis Joseph was born Helen Egan on October 29, 1911 in Quincy, MA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1932 and received the habit on June 28 1933 when she was given the religious name, Sister Francis Joseph. She pronounced first vows on June 29, 1934 and final vows on August 20, 1940. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1934-1936, 1956-; St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1936-1941; St. Boniface, New York City, 1941-; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1948-; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1965-1967; and Mt. St. Mary College Library, Director, 1967-1978, 1978-1979, and 1979-1982, part time. Sister also served as: Sub-Prioress, Mt. St. Mary, 1962; Coordinator of Associate Membership Projects and Special Projects, Mt. St. Mary College Projects; Pastoral Ministry Institute and Artists on Campus, 1982-1985; Moderator of Dominican Laity Chapter; and Sacristan at Mt. St. Mary. Sister Francis Joseph earned an MA in Liberal Science from Catholic University, Washington, DC; a BLS in Library Science, Villanova University, PA; and a certification in Theology from Providence College, Providence, RI. She died August 25, 1997.
