Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Edith was born Eileen Droz on August 11, 1918 in Cambridge, MA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on October 15, 1944 and received the habit on June 21, 1945 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Edith. She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Brendan, New Haven, CT, 1946-1948; St. Mary, Gloucester,... NJ, 1948-1949; Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1949-1951; St. Elizabeth, Elizabeth City, NC, 1951-1955; Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1955-1956; and Academia San Jose HS, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, 1956-2004. Sister Mary Edith earned: her BS from Boston University; an MA from Villanova University, Villanova, PA; and an MA in Religious Studies, Providence College, Providence, RI. She died August 4, 2004.
