Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Janice was born Jeanette Marie Estella Dionne on April 2, 1926 in Providence, RI. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1946 and received the habit on June 25, 1947 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Janice. She pronounced first vows on June 26, 1948 and final vows on August 27, 1951. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Patrick, Woodbury, NJ, 1948-1949; Saint Anthony, Hawthorne, NJ, 1949-1953; and Saint Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1953-1960. Sister then moved on to secondary education and taught French at Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, 1960-1967, and was principal at Saint Joseph High School in Toms River, NJ, 1967-1971. She moved to Newburgh, NY and began working at Mt. St. Mary College, where she served as assistant professor of French, 1971-1990, and academic advisor for the Continuing Education Office, 1983-1995. After completing a sabbatical in 1997, she returned to Mt. St. Mary College, where she resumed her role as academic advisor until 2001. She then did volunteer ministry for the sisters at the Fall River and Newburgh Centers of Hope until her retirement in 2002. Sister Janice earned her BA in French from Villanova University, and her Master’s degree in French from Laval University in Quebec, Canada.
