Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie was born Marie DiCamillo on March 6, 1932 in Camden, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 7, 1952 and received the habit on June 12, 1953 when she was given the religious name, Sister Joseph Mary. (She began using the name, Sister Marie, after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 16, 1954 and final vows on August 21, 1957. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1954-1961; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1961-1967; Saint Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1967-1970; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1970-1971; Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1971-1972; and Saint Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1972-1980. She was also engaged in the following ministries: a special education teacher at Camden County Health Services Center, Lakeland, NJ, 1980-1988; teacher of handicapped at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital, Ancora, NJ, 1988-1996; and guidance counselor and vocational teacher at the Atlantic County Transitional School for the Department of Human Services/Office of Education, 1996-1998. Sister Marie worked with the Southern Region Child Study Team/Department of Human Services/Office of Education, working at the Gloucester Campus in Williamstown, NJ, 1998-2005, and at the satellite office at Burlington County Special Services School District/Lumberton Campus, NJ. She continued her ministry there as a volunteer, 2006-. Sister Marie earned her BA in History/English from Seton Hall University, and her MA in Student Personnel Service from Glassboro State College. She died September 13, 2017.
