Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary of Lourdes was born Irine Dextradeur on October 17, 1923 in New Bedford, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on August 28, 1944 and received the habit on August 14, 1945 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary of Lourdes. She pronounced first vows on August 30, 1946 and final vows on August 30, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Anne, Fall River, MA, 1946-1954, 1956-1958, 1973-1995; Dominican Academy Elementary School, Fall River, MA, 1959-1960; Dominican Academy High School, Fall River, MA, 1960-1966; St. Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1955-1956; and St. Bernadette School, New Haven, CT, 1970-1972. Other ministries include administrative services to the Fall River Center of Hope and Dominican Academy, 1995-2002. Sister retired in 2002 and moved with several other sisters, to the Landmark in Fall River. Sister Mary of Lourdes earned her BA in English and History from the College of the Sacred Hearts in Fall River, MA. She also completed courses at Regis College in Weston, MA, and at Providence College in Rhode Island. She died Aril 25, 2016.
