From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maureen was born Maureen Delaney on September 22, 1931 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1949 and received the habit on June 16, 1950 when she was given the religious name, Sister Joseph Rosaire.(She began using the name, Sister Maureen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 21, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1951-1955; St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1955-1960; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1960-1962; Academia San Jose, Guaynabo, PR, 1962-1966; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1966-1968; and Sacred Heart School in Camden, NJ, 1968-1970. Sister taught high school level at Our Lady of Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1970-1973, and at Paterson Catholic Regional HS in Paterson, NJ, 1973-1975. She was vice-principal and academic dean at Neumann Prep in Wayne, NJ, 1975-1978. Sister taught at Science High School in Newark, NJ, 1979-1993, and at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Hoboken, NJ, 1994-2001. Sister Maureen was program assistant in the Early Intervention Program at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson, NJ, 2002-2004, and program assistant at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, 2004-2006. She moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope in 2007. In addition to her regular ministry, Sister Maureen volunteered: in a soup kitchen; tutoring program; and church youth group in various locations in New Jersey. Sister earned her BS in Secondary Education from Villanova University, PA, and her MS in Physical Science from Wesleyan College, OH. Recognitions that Sister Maureen has received over the years include: The Science Teachers Achievement Award in 1968; a grant to study in Sicily at the International School of Cosmology & Gravitation in 1973; an award in Career Education in the Science Classroom in 1979; and the NJ Education Association Award for Professional Development for a “Safety in Lab” project. She has received a number of grants and was listed in Who’s Who in the World and in the East. She also received the President’s Achievement Award for Environment Protection Service, 1989-1991, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Law Enforcement Association in 1998. She died January 4, 2013.
